Rug Hooked Sheep

This weekend my husband and I took a 3-D rug hooking class at Primitive Homespuns Wool and Needleworks in Frederick, Maryland.

Matt had given me rug hooking kits and a frame for Christmas. I’m almost done the beginner pattern he gave me and year or so I had completed a small rug hooking project I had bought in Kentucky at the Woolery many years ago that used yarn instead of wool strips but I had taught myself. I thought it would be fun to take a class where I made a rug hooked object start to finish and get some tips.

Matt thought it sounded fun when I mentioned it so we signed up to go together. I was hoping for good weather to make more of a day of it but it was raining really heavily!

The class was a lot of fun, we made the whole project from hooking the rug, to sewing on the backing, stuffing it and putting on all the details like wrapping the legs in wool and making a little blanket in four hours.

The instructor was a lot of fun and very nice. The group was lively and had various backgrounds in both jobs and fiber arts. No lags in conversation!

I’d be excited to go back for another class. It’s a bit of a drive but we learned a lot and it was one of the best classes I’ve taken, if not the best.

Rug hooking is a lot of fun. Like knitting, it’s really something small you can do while watching TV or listening to an audio book with little set up, which is a major advantage over weaving!
