Knitted Shopping Bag

Last Febuary, my husband and I took a beginning knitting class and made a hat. Then we started working our way through the book You Will Be Able to Knit by the End of This Book by Rosie Fletcher. We made nearly every pattern–reusuable face wipes, colorblock cushion cover, mug cozy, tablet case, baby shoes, wrist warmers, mitered square blanket, cushion cover (but it didn’t match up to pillow form called for so I only made one panel), a slouchy beanie, hot water bottle cover, a stuffed bear and this shopping bag. We did skip one of the hats, a scarf and I unraveled a second scarf about half finished because it was too wide for my neck and I didn’t want to waste the yarn, and a door stop.

This was the final project-a open weave market bag. I was going to make the straps on my inklette but I thought they’d be too difficult to attach to the lacy bag without using the sewing machine. Instead, I use cords I made using my Latchet Lucet last year. It is a very lightweight bag and very fun to make!

Now I need to find a new project. I’m leaning towards the famous Sophie Scarf, it looks like a good use of leftover yarn from the book projects and easy new skill-building. I am looking forward to having time to do other things but knitting in the evenings though! I want to do more weaving and I got a rug hooking frame and kits for Christmas I’ve done a little with.

I highly recommend the book! There were some missteps but some of it might have been that it was a British book and she had to translate the measurements. The cushion cover was nowhere near the size of the insert she called for or any other standard cushion I could find. The directions were clear and the patterns were varied. I have a lot more confidence in my knitting now. I don’t think I will ever make a very large complicated outfit but knitting is very portable and it is nice to have something easy to do that doesn’t involve a lot of set up (like weaving) or space (weaving, rug hooking).
