Mitered Square Blanket

I spent a lot of August and September knitting squares for the blanket (even at the beach!) and then realized it was a little small once I finally stitched them all together earlier this month.

It’s from You Will Be Able to Knit by the End of This Book and as-is it would probably work ad a baby blanket or a lap blanket for a small child.

I put it aside for a bit and knitted a pillow cover and a mohair hat from the book and then knitted up two more squares while Matt finished his hat and pillow cover.

Matt didn’t love making the mitered squares. I think we realized we are two different types of knitters. I like something I can work through without a lot of thought and he likes patterns and designs that require more thought and effort.

The pattern called for 12 squares and he ended up stopping at six so we could move on to the hat. Two didn’t coordinate with my colors at all so I made them into a little pouch for cords or electronics. The other four were darker than my main colors but went with the variegated yarn I had used well enough.

I added his four to each corner of my twelve and added two new squares in the middle. The blanket is longer than it is wide but it covers my lap with some room for our pughuahua Lulu and over my knees which is what I wanted.

If I had know how small it was going to be, I might have planned for us making a blanket together from the beginning and picked six colors that went well together. Then we could have had one big 24 square blanket and maybe Matt would have pushed through and made the last six.

Or maybe not! I don’t want to make anymore squares because I want to move on to other projects and 18 does work fine. We have a lot of blankets! A lap blanket is fun but we really don’t need bigger ones.

We only have 3 more projects left in the book! I’ve been enjoying working our way through it but we’ve been doing it since February and I’m looking forward to having time to work on some weaving or other projects. I also need to finish that scarf I stopped back in August.
